In the 1980s, the Movida Madrileña gave rise to a vibrant artistic, musical and cultural scene, symbolising a new era of freedom following Franco’s dictatorship. That creative, rebellious spirit still echoes through parts of the city today.

At La Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory turned cultural and artistic space, street art covers the walls. At Matadero Madrid, a former slaughterhouse complex has been transformed into a vast contemporary arts centre, hosting exhibitions, performances and all kinds of artistic projects.
